The 1983-84 Ranger Varsity baseball team finished the season with a 19-12 record. The Rangers won their own tourney, the Blue Chip Conference title and the first sectional crown in eight years, by beating Pike Central 2-0, Southridge 6-5, and Jasper 3-0 who had been ranked #1 in the state that year (single class). At the first game of the Jasper Regionals, the Rangers lost to a really good Mitchell team. This baseball team had a strong group of role players and graduated only two seniors from that team, Keith Knust and Brain Boegin.
The pitcher Ron Wilgus had a wicked curve ball and shut out Jasper, in the sectional championship, 2-0. They lost in the regional game, after havng an unfortunate line-drive double play.

Talking with Jim Mehling
1984 was Coach Mehling's third year of coaching. He states that this was an outstanding team. There were two seniors that year that went on to play in college, Ron Wilgus went to South Eastern Illinois, Jr. College. Scott Kluemper went to Rose Hulman. The most memorable moment of this season was when they played Mitchell in the regional game. They were so close to winning. A ball got hit towards the third base line, they thought it was going to be a double play, but, it wasn't.
